I did 3 color thumbnails of the same bg to explore and see what kind of color palette fits best with this type of scene..its about a guy standing in front of his judges..I pushed the scaling as well here to make him more vulnerable..I prefer the middle one..the top one is a bit too warm and friendly..so I went for a colder palette..

From time to time I like to go back to black and white values,its like B&W photography,the image has more impact,more contrast..
I exaggerated the scaling here to emphasize the drama of the moment of a ship that is about to sink and the desperate attempt of the last 3 sailors to save what is left in the vault...

Another quick color sketch i did as a visual development..The painting actually turned out differently from the rough pencil sketch..but thats what i like about this..it evolves as you paint..Scaling is important here as it is a fantasy world,our character stands out really tiny but clearly in a pool of light..

Experiment here: i started with just a black canvas and painted the face directly without a pencil sketch first..its interesting how you can pull out light and shapes from a black bg..the idea was to have a person approaching a mirror, face lit by a small bulb above it..

Another version of the "painting" i did with the little boy running up the street..this is more of a dramatic shot,emphasising the position of the little dairy shop being so high it is snowing only in that particular area..at the same time it creates a focal point in contrast with the dark brown colors of the Chicago style city..
